Yoav Fisher

The fourth episode of season two of Healthcare Reimagined was recorded on December 28th, 2020.

I interviewed Yoav Fisher, head of technological innovation and digital health for a nonprofit called HealthIL, that's funded by the Israeli Ministry of Economy. Yoav and his team work with companies that are in need of technology to help them solve problems. Yoav helps them define their needs and challenges, and then helps match them with relevant startups. The challenge specific to innovation that HealthIL has adopted starts with deep understanding of the problem Only once the stakeholders truly understand the issues does Yoav match them with startups that might be able to help.

Anchor 1
Zack Gray

The third episode of season two of Healthcare Reimagined was recorded on December 3rd, 2020.

I interviewed Zack Gray, the Co-Founder and CEO of Ophelia, which is addressing the opioid epidemic by making medication-assisted treatment (MAT) private, convenient, and affordable for patients.

Zack studied Astrophysics and Philosophy at Columbia, and received his MBA from Wharton. Zack spoke about how doctors need a special waiver to prescribe the medication that helps cure opioid addiction, which fewer than 5% of them have, making it difficult to get.

Dr. Edmondo Robinson

The second episode of season two of Healthcare Reimagined was recorded on November 17th, 2020. I had a chance to speak with Dr. Edmondo Robinson, who is the Chief Digital Innovation officer for the Moffitt Cancer Center.

In his last role, he served as the Chief Transformation Officer and Senior VP of Consumerism at ChristianaCare, one of the largest health care providers in the mid-Atlantic. Dr. Robinson is an associate professor of oncologic sciences at the University of South Florida’s Morsani College of Medicine.

Meghna Patel

The first episode of season two of Healthcare Reimagined was recorded on October 5th, 2020. I had a chance to speak with Meghna Patel, who is the Deputy Secretary for Health Innovation at the Pennsylvania Department of Health. We began with a discussion on Pennsylvania's prescription drug monitoring program, which Meghna and her team launched in a five month time-frame as a means of addressing the growing opioid crisis.

The database is available to all licensed prescribers in the state, and in less than four years has grown to serve 110,000 active users on the system. Since the launch of the program, there has been a 35% reduction in opioid prescriptions in the state of Pennsylvania, which is remarkable progress in such a short time.

Ruth Krystopolski

Ruth Krystopolski has spent the last 30 years in Healthcare. Over the past 5 years, she has been deeply focused on population health within her present role as the Senior VP of Population Health at Atrium Health, as well as her previous role as the Senior VP of Population Health at CHRISTUS Health. Atrium Health encompasses over 40 hospitals, and 900 post-acute care locations, and Ruth and I spoke about the challenges of serving such a large and heterogeneous population.

When drive-through testing sites failed to increase the testing-rate-per-thousand among people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, realizing that many didn't have cars, Atrium repurposed two of it's Wellness-on-Wheels vehicles to drive around these neighborhoods using hot spotting and heat-mapping to identify locations that would maximize the impact of their efforts. We also spoke about shifting care from the Hospital to the home for COVID-positive patients to improve the patient experience and reduce risk to staff.

Srulik Dvorsky

On June 22nd, 2020, I spoke with Israel (Srulik) Dvorsky, CEO and founder of TailorMed. After 6 members of Srulik's family were diagnosed with cancer, his frustrations with payment issues around their treatment, his passion for helping people, and his love for and experience with technology led him to create an end-to-end solution for patient financial navigation services via a comprehensive software solution.

Tailormed allows patients to afford care they couldn't otherwise afford, and helps providers receive payment for care that would otherwise be uncompensated. In an 8 month case study with the Cowell Family cancer center, they reviewed 244 patients, and were able to secure one or more forms of assistance for 74% of those patients based on financial opportunities identified by the software. Thanks to Tailormed, over $3.5 million in approved savings were secured for those patients.

Dr. Richard Zane

Dr. Richard Zane, Chief Innovation Officer of UCHealth, was not only incredibly informative and insightful, but a great sport when we told him we would be recording a video even though we didn't warn him in advance or give him time to change! Dr. Zane spent 14 years at Brigham and Women's, where he served as the Vice Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Success in an emergency is all about preparation, and the speed with which you can adapt to changing realities on the ground.

We spoke in this episode about best-practices clinical pathways UCHealth put into place across the continuum of care prior to the Pandemic that allowed them to adjust to the changing realities of COVID in real time. By adapting to present realities using existing processes, UCHealth was able to absorb a 7000% increase in virtual urgent-care visits in several weeks, and saw an 11,000% percent increase in the utilization of pathways

Dr. Meena Seshamani

On May 20th, 2020, I interviewed Dr. Meena Seshamani, who as VP of Clinical Care Transformation at Medstar Health, leads value-based care initiatives across the 10-hospital, 300-outpatient clinic health system. Prior to her work at Medstar, Dr. Seshamani was the Director of the Office of Health Reform at the DOHHS, where she drove strategy and managed the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

We discussed the importance of post-discharge follow-up for low-income COVID patients, and Medstar's coordination between nurses and community health workers to ensure patients have their basic needs addressed and can properly isolate. Dr. Seshamani shared her thoughts on what steps could be taken at a National level to curb the spread of this virus and safely reopen the economy.

Stephen Dansinger

I interviewed Stephen Dansiger on May 15th, 2020. Stephen is the CEO of StartAgain and the founder of the MET(T)A Protocol. The protocol Stephen developed is based in the idea that integrating mindfulness and EMDR therapy represents best practice for providing trauma resolution, and trauma resolution represents the best outcome for people suffering from addiction and other mental and emotional health issues. Stephen spoke about tips for non-clinicians hoping to provide support for those going through difficult times, as well as about his work with clinicians to help them support others, and equally if not more importantly, themselves.

Dr. Jennifer Meller

I interviewed Dr. Jennifer Meller, a practicing NYC Physician and the CEO of Navimize. Navimize integrates into EMR's and utilizing proprietary algorithms, measures clicks as a means of determining how far behind doctors are running. Navimize can set up automatic alerts to patients via text to ensure that they are not showing up too early for delayed appointments. Even before COVID-19, 30% of patients left waiting rooms when lines are too long, and 20% never returned. But while this was once a nice to have; today, preventing backups in waiting rooms has become essential. Dr. Meller discussed how Navimize is also helping Health Systems and practices to organize digital waiting rooms, and how Dr. Meller believes the Pandemic will forever shift waiting rooms.

You can learn more about Navimize on their website, Navimize.com, or by emailing Jennifer at Jennifer@Navimize.com.

Dr. Danish Nagda

I spoke with Danish Nagda on April 29th, 2020. Speaking with Dr. Nagda gave me a glimpse into the future. His company, Rezilient, can perform 4 of the 5 components of the traditional physical exam using a robot, and they expect to have the ability to perform palpation when the launch of 5G becomes more ubiquitous late next year. By allowing doctors to examine patients as though they were right in front of them, Dr. Nagda is increasing access to care and quality of care, while reducing the risk of infection for frontlines healthcare workers.

His company is on pace to be to Primary Care what Tesla is to the automobile industry - he is completely rethinking the way things are done. Danish is funny, articulate, and engaging - this is an episode you do not want to miss. You can learn more about Rezilient on their website, https://www.rezilienthealth.com/

Trevor Price

In this episode, recorded on April 13th, 2020, I interviewed Trevor Price, CEO, founder & GP of Oxeon Holdings and Town Hall Ventures. Oxeon is a specialized professional services and investments firm that builds and accelerates the growth of impactful healthcare technology and services businesses. Their executive search firm interviews nearly 25,000 top executives in the healthcare technology space each year, allowing them to identify gaps in healthcare, invest in companies that are meeting those needs and build companies to address the existing gaps. Trevor also speaks in depth about the NYC Covid-19 rapid response coalition. On their website, http://www.nyccovid19.org, you can learn more about how they are delivering meals, medication, counseling and care to at-risk populations throughout NYC by combining SMS, telephonic, telehealth, and in-home care through a network of clinical and logistical support services.

Dr. Kris Laudanski

This episode with Dr. Kris Laudanski was recorded on April 10th, 2020. Kris is board certified in anesthesiology and critical care, and splits his time between his practice as an intensive care doctor at Penn Health, research, teaching, and innovation. He is also the President of SHCI.

In this episode, Kris and I spoke about the emotional weight of serving as a front-lines physician during a Pandemic, as well as the innovations that have been advanced out of the necessity brought on by COVID-19. We discussed Telehealth, the increasing role of AI, and the lack of red tape that has allowed for big advances in a short period of time

Dr. Patrick Kim

This conversation with Dr. Patrick Kim was recorded on March 26th of 2020, and was the first episode of the "Healthcare Reimagined" podcast. Dr. Kim spoke about his work as an attending surgeon at Penn Medicine in the divisions of trauma, critical care, and emergency general surgery. As the division Vice Chief, Dr. Kim is able to provide a unique perspective both as a practicing physician and as a clinical leader. Dr. Kim tells us about the steps Penn is taking to prepare for the surge of patients they are expecting, and how, on a personal level, being a trauma surgeon has given him some insights into how to prepare for high pressure situations.
