First Session
Dagmar Monett, PhD
Dagmar Monett is Professor of Computer Science at the Berlin School of Economics and Law, HWR Berlin; Co-founder of the AGI Sentinel Initiative, AGISI.org; and AI expert at Ms.AI, “Artificial Intelligence for and with Women.”
She is a professional member of the Association for Computing Machinery; a board member of the Berlin Federation of Professors, hlb LV Berlin; Advisory Board member at AI Forum; and has served as invited speaker, session chair, author, and member of scientific committees at several AI (and non-AI) leading conferences and workshops worldwide.Her current research fields include AI, digital education ethics, software engineering methods and techniques, and computer science education.
Her most recent work focuses on intelligence research, particularly on defining and understanding both (machine) intelligence and its boundaries. She is also interested in machine learning, robotics in education, metaheuristics, knowledge-based systems, and software design and development including Agile. Her previous scientific work addresses distributed AI, agents and multiagent systems, automatic differentiation, and socionics.
She obtained her PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin after graduating in Computer Science (M.Sc.) and Mathematical Cybernetics (B.Sc.) from the Havana University.
Eric Eaton, PhD
Eric Eaton is a faculty member in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, and a member of the GRASP (General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, & Perception) lab.
Prior to joining Penn, he was a visiting assistant professor at Bryn Mawr College, and a senior research scientist at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories.
His primary research interests lie in the field of machine learning and interactive AI, focusing on lifelong machine learning, continual learning, knowledge transfer, multi-task learning, deep learning, representation discovery, interpretable methods, and applications to service robotics and personalized medicine.
Michael Akinwumi, PhD
Michael Akinwumi leads the AI/ML governance engineering efforts at Trust Science where he works with engineers and the business folks to ensure that their AI-powered credit solutions for subprime borrowers are fair, transparent, explainable, accountable, and of high quality.
Previously, Michael worked on a recommendation engine that a Canadian bank used to anticipate the needs of their customers, prioritizes the offers based on expected customer satisfaction and customer equity, while improving the average lifetime value of the customers.

He pioneered the use of machine learning models at a Canadian Insurance company where he worked closely with a diverse team of actuaries, business analysts, applications developers, and business executives. He earned him the respect of the company's VP of Underwriting who said “... You are a tremendous person that has made a lasting impact on this organization. I truly hope ... that we can stay in touch.”

Raised with parents who had no high school education, he determined to demonstrate that success is neither in one's background nor in the school but rather in the mind. He now uses his professional works and mathematical sciences skills to live for others, especially the underprivileged.
Vincent Alessi
Vincent Alessi is a nationally acclaimed inventor, scientist, and organization builder. He currently serves as associate director and head of strategic information and data science at the Michigan based data R&D group, The Interoperability Institute, and is researcher in the University of Michigan department of Computational Medicine and bioinformatics under its joint chairs, Dr. Brian Athey and Gil Omenn.

Following his service with the US departments of energy and defense, Vince founded Aquaro Diagnostics Inc and Covaron Advanced Materials Inc, , for which he served as CEO/CSO and CTO respectively and raised a collective $25 million in private capital.
His work has been recognized and supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Harvard Medical School Procter Fellowship, MIT SAE Innovation of the Year, Forbes 30 under 30 (2016, Industry), Predoctoral Fellowship at Rockefeller University, Schusterman Foundation Fellowship, the Materials Connexion (Steelcase) Material of the year, Walmart’s global winner for ‘better living though innovation’, Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition, and the Leigh Steinberg Foundation Brain Health Awareness Award. He currently holds 20 granted and pending patents in diagnostics, informatics, and advanced materials space.
Krzysztof Laudanski, MD, PhD
First Session Moderator
Krzysztof “Kris” Laudanski, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests focus on the regulation of DNA expression in survivors after critical care illnesses, health care operations/medical decision-making processes, and healthcare innovation. He is a PI on the NIH-funded projects focusing on epigenetic recovery after a critical care illness. His research leads to founding a start-up Qbimm Diagnostic. His work showed that suboptimal decision-making processes might expose patients to unnecessary risks and have negative economic consequences for hospital systems.
Dr. Laudanski is particularly interested in tele-ICU integration with wearable devices, predictive medicine and alternative models of health care delivery. Adjusting health care operations and delivery based on the availability, cultural specificity, and local demands is another area of interest that is frequently pursued by Kris in the austere and remote settings. He employs simulations, narrative studies, and cognitive testing to discover operating problems and inspire medical providers to transform.
His passion is to provide support to future generations of medical professionals. Being a mentor is creative and fulfilling work that begins with creating a tailored plan that fits both the mentee’s and mentor’s interests, goals, and passion. His past mentees work at various academic positions (Stanford, Yale), private companies (Merck), or were awarded prestigious scholarships (NSF).

Shafi Ahmed, PhD
Professor Shafi Ahmed is a multi-award-winning surgeon, teacher, futurist, innovator and entrepreneur. He is a 3x TEDx and international keynote speaker and is faculty at Harvard Medical School, Bart’s Medical School, Imperial College London, Queen Mary University, Bradford University, and Singularity University where he teaches medicine, innovation, and digital transformation.
He is currently a member of the NHS Assembly, an advisor to the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health, the appointed 2020 Vodafone Connected Health Ambassador, and a laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgeon at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals.
He chairs the WebitHealth summit in Spain and co-founded the GIANT health summit in London. He is not only one of the top 20 global influencers in digital health/innovation but also is a HIMSS Future50 clinical leader 2020. He has delivered over 250 international keynotes on the future of healthcare/digital transformation, and his work is featured in over 400 outlets.

His mission is to merge the world of medicine, global education, and virtual/augmented reality to democratize and scale surgical education to make it affordable and accessible. He cofounded Medical Realties, a VR education company and is a non-executive director of Medic Bleep, a communications platform for healthcare professionals and Imera AI, a radiology artificial intelligence company.
David Sylvan
In his role as President of UH Ventures, David has a portfolio of responsibilities including core operations, industry partnerships, technology transfer, commercialization, business development and strategic initiatives.
He collaborates with UH leaders to accelerate system growth through new business endeavors and expansion of existing programs. His work includes identification and evaluation of new opportunities through acquisitions, investments, joint ventures and other arrangements. David comes to UH Ventures after a successful career in capital markets, where he led a derivatives’ trading and public finance investment banking platform. Prior to this, David spent 8 years at the sports marketing giant, IMG. He is also an adjunct professor in Weatherhead Business School’s department of Design & Innovation. David received a Bachelors in Commerce and Business Law from the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University.

Additionally, David serves as the interim CEO of a New York-based FinTech startup, Paradigm, an automated OTC trading platform for digital assets. David lives in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife, Audrey. They have a son in medical school and a daughter who is a high-school senior. And a Vizsla named Oliver.
John Younger, MD, MS
John began his career with a 20-year turn as a translational physician scientist at the University of Michigan, where he built and led a research program that applied chemical engineering and mathematical tools to sepsis and medical device infection.
In 2015, he left his practice and laboratory to launch Akadeum Life Sciences, a research tool company that generated revenue in its first year and raised its Series A in 2019. Most recently, following his family’s move to the East Coast, John served as the Vice President for Science and Technology at the University City Science Center, a long-standing engine for life science company formation in West Philadelphia.
At the Science Center, John oversaw incubation and early stage investments. Currently, John is Principal at Argo Pond Consulting, where he leads the partnership’s life science practice. Throughout, John has had enduring passions for opportunity creation and in the promise of pragmatic computational approaches to improve human health.
Corey Feldman, MBA

Corey is the CEO and founder of The Examined Life LLC, a healthcare consulting firm with a focus on social determinants of health, behavioral health, and value-based care.
Previously, Corey was the VP of BD at Emmacare, a CCM startup, and the Director of Sales at Parachute Health, a healthcare SaaS company that automated the insurance requirements for ordering DME to prevent delayed throughput and readmissions caused by documentation issues. Corey is an Erickson certified professional coach, holds an Executive MBA from the Quantic School of Business and Technology, and is currently getting his Masters in Healthcare Innovation from The University of Pennsylvania.

Renée Cummings
An AI ethicist, criminologist, and criminal psychologist, Renée Cummings specializes in diverse, equitable and inclusive AI design, development and deployment, ethical AI policy and governance, and using AI to save lives. A Columbia University community scholar, and the founder of Urban AI, LLC, she works at the intersection of AI, criminal justice, epidemiological and urban criminology and urban health.
She has extensive experience in trauma-informed justice interventions, homicide reduction, gun and gang violence prevention, juvenile justice, and evidence-based policing. Her work extends to therapeutic jurisprudence, rehabilitation, recidivism and substance abuse treatment. She is committed to fusing AI with criminal justice for ethical real time solutions to enhance public health, public safety and quality of life.

Emmanuel Goffi, PhD
Emmanuel R. Goffi is an expert in ethics and artificial intelligence. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Science Po-CERI, and has served in the French Air Force for 27 years mainly as an analyst in international relations and ethics.
He is the Director of the Observatoire Éthique & Intelligence Artificielle of the Institut Sapiens and associate professor of AI ethics at aivancity, School for Technology Business & Society, in Paris. He is also a research fellow with the Centre for Defence and Security Studies at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Canada, and currently teaches AI ethics in France, in Canada and in Germany.
Emmanuel is the author and the co-editor of several books, and has written numerous articles and book chapters in French and English.
He is regularly invited to give talks and lectures, and to participate to expert meetings in France and abroad.
Aalpen Patel, MD
Dr. Aalpen Patel is a physician engineer, informatician, active teacher, and researcher. He has a particular interest in machine and deep learning, mathematical modeling of biological processes, informatics, and 3D printing. Dr. Patel is the Chair of the Department of Radiology, Medical Director for Artificial Intelligence (for the Steele Institute for Health Innovation and Geisinger), Medical Director for 3D Imaging and Printing Laboratory for Geisinger.
He leads the informatics efforts in Radiology at Geisinger. Dr. Patel has over 100 publications and has given several invited lectures at regional, national and international conferences. He has been at Geisinger in various capacities for nearly 10 years. Dr. Patel is an electrical engineer and clinically an Interventional Radiologist. He is boarded in Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, and Clinical Informatics and is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Patel started his career with IBM, designing computer chips, and subsequently transitioned to medicine.
He obtained his MD from Rutgers University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and received training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Temple University Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center. He served as faculty in Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania (Perelman School of Medicine) for more than 8 years before coming to Geisinger. Dr. Patel currently serves as a clinical faculty member at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.
Gregory P Shea Ph.D.
Gregory P. Shea, Ph.D., consults, teaches, researches, and writes in the areas of organizational and individual change, leadership, innovation, and group effectiveness. He has worked extensively in multiple industries and with senior leadership including boards of directors as well as deep within organizations. He is a Senior Fellow at the Wharton School’s Center for Leadership and Change, Adjunct Professor of Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and of its Aresty Institute of Executive Education, Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the Wharton School, President of Shea & Associates, Inc. He served as Academic Director for the Johnson and Johnson/Wharton Program for Health System CEO’s and for fourteen years as Academic Director for the Johnson and Johnson/Wharton Fellows Program for Nurse Executives. His awards include an Excellence in Teaching Award from Wharton. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the American Psychological Association.

Amir Kimia, MD
Amir Kimia, MD is Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program faculty at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
His interest is applying NLP in clinical research and in specific allowing clinicians to have exposure and access as medical experts, yet lay people in the computer science domain.
Assaf Landschaft, MSc
Assaf Landschaft, M.Sc. is an experienced software developer and data scientist. As a medical research collaborator in Boston Children’s Hospital, Assaf uses state of the art software engineering, machine learning, and natural language processing algorithms for medical research applications and workflows.
These applications are finely tuned to the needs of the clinical and research staff.
Yasar Ayaz, PhD
Dr. Yasar Ayaz is Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at NUST. He is Chairman & Central Project Director of National Center of Artificial Intelligence which is Government of Pakistan’s top technology initiative in Artificial Intelligence with funding of more than Rs. 1 Billion. He is the founder and President of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in Pakistan and bears the honorary title of Specially-Appointed Professor at Tohoku University, Japan.
As the Founding Head of Department of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at NUST, Prof Yasar designed and launched Pakistan’s first MS & PhD programs in the field of Robotics and Intelligent Machine Engineering in 2011. He is the author of well over 100 international publications and has several product patents. Particularly, his research on Motion Planning and Humanoid Robotics has been cited by top universities of more than 13 countries. In May 2014, Prof Yasar was conferred with President’s Gold Medal by President of Pakistan for being the Overall Best Teacher of NUST and was named one of the Top 20 Most Eminent Scientists of Pakistan by National Academy of Young Scientists, Pakistan.
Mark Sujan, PhD

Dr Mark Sujan is founder of Human Factors Everywhere, a small company dedicated to helping people adopt human-centred approaches for running a safe and secure business. He is a Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist (C.ErgHF). Mark is a non-executive director of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) and leads the Digital Health & AI special interest group.
He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Fellow of the Safety and Reliability Society (FSaRS). Mark holds an honorary Associate Professorship with the University of Warwick. He is co-author of “Building Safer Healthcare Systems”, which forms the basis for the national patient safety syllabus adopted by the NHS, and in that capacity, he is a member of the advisory board with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC).
